Think you know Lancashire? Why not explore these lesser-known areas on your next trip?
MEANDER THROUGH PICTURE PERFECT DOWNHAM
DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF PENDLE HILL
You can see this impressive landmark from so many spots across the county as it dominates many Lancashire's skylines, but there is nothing like seeing it up close. Head to the village of Barley to take in its wild beauty and start the pretty challenging walk to the top. If the hill itself isn't appealing, or you’re travelling with younger kids, the nearby Pendle Sculpture trail is on the side of a neighbouring, but much smaller, hill and offers fun sculptures to enjoy. Nearby Roughlee features a statue of famous Pendle Witch Alice Nutter, and you can learn all about the Lancashire Witch Trails in the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford which is also close by. The heritage centre is also the start of the 41-mile Pendle Witch Trail which follows the route taken by Alice and others accused of witchcraft, on their way to their trials in Lancaster Castle in 1612.
Known for its strict preservation rules meaning that there are no TV aerials, overhead wires or satellite dishes allowed in the village, Downham in the Ribble Valley features stone built cottages, a splendid 15th century church tower and of course a hall fit for a lord. The village has been used in films and TV shows including the classic film, Whistle Down the Wind and more recently, for the BBC’s The Secret of Crickley Hall. Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Sawley, where you can find the ruins of a Cistercian Abbey dating back to 1148! The site is set against the backdrop of the Pennines and is a marvel to walk around, there are tours open to the public on August 8th as well. Nearby Whalley also offers an incredible abbey to too.

HEYSHAM ST PATRICK'S CHAPEL AND STONE GRAVES A cliffside wander overlooking Morecambe Bay is rewarding in itself, but when you also take in the ancient stone-hewn graves that featured on a Black Sabbath album cover and the picturesque, ruined chapel on the cliff edge, it gets even better. There is a lovely circular route around the area that starts and ends in Heysham Village, and you can walk, or a cycle, from the chapel down the promenade towards Morecambe, stopping at great play areas on the route! Morecambe’s West End is often overlooked in favour of Heysham and the main promenade, but there are fantastic water fountains for the kids to splash about it and a stunning beach cafe where you will find some incredible homemade bakes. BEAUTIFUL GARDENS AND BOAT HIRE IN BURNLEY Lazing on the lake in a rowing boat on a warm summer's day, is there anything more relaxing? Head to Thompson Park in Burnley for time on the water, which we’re sure the kids will love, and a visit to their stunning, picture-perfect Italian gardens. The town’s green spaces are often overlooked, with both Towneley Hall and Gawthorpe Hall pulling in visitors for their interiors, but both have incredible outdoor spaces. At Gawthorpe Hall you will find beautifully manicured grounds, a wild walled garden and fabulous nature inspired play areas for kids to enjoy. Towneley Park is home to the town’s Parkrun every Saturday, an 18-hole golf course, pitch and putt course, cricket and football pitches, wonderful woodland, cafe, playgrounds, bowling greens and more. Did you know that Queens Park is also home to a Park Yoga event too? It’s just one of four locations in the North West where the weekend Park Yoga event takes place from 9:30 to 10:30am on Sundays from May to September.
