Roll Up at Showtown! Lancashire’s industrial and transport history may be well known, but did you know that Blackpool played an important role in the development of entertainment? Seaside resorts were an integral part of the industrial revolution, with the need for a place to escape the steam and smog of the mill towns, for a hard-earned holiday during the annual Wakes Week. This week allowed mill workers time to enjoy a breath of fresh air, to relax with their families and friends, and to have some fun. Blackpool soon developed as an important place for entertainers to build their careers. The likes of Morecambe and Wise, Victoria Wood, Tommy Cooper, Johnny Vegas, Peter Kay and Alfie Boe all performed regularly in the resort, and many still do. Blackpool also continues to showcase talent through popular TV shows like Britain’s Got Talent and Strictly Come Dancing.
With all these fantastic connections to entertainment, it's only right that Blackpool’s first permanent museum is an all-singing, all-dancing one! Showtown tells the story of Blackpool’s showbiz heritage and is a hands-on experience for the whole family to enjoy. Discover precious items belonging to the country's best-loved performers, punch and Judy, Blackpool's donkey rides, and the world-famous illuminations in more detail than ever before! Once you're done be sure to head to Blackpool Tower which has overlooked the promenade since the late 1800's, get your feet moving in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, or watch the Tower Circus, the oldest permanent circus arena still in continuous operation in the world.
