Take in the sights, sounds and sense of Wartime Blackpool

Did you know you could experience the flight of a lifetime in a Spitfire from Hanger 42? Including the legendary 'Victory Roll' manoeuvre.

Staying in the wartime era, Blackpool played a major part of the UKs defence. The area was a wartime training hub for the RAF and Hanger 42 at Squires Gate was commandeered for the organisation. Throughout the war the Hanger was used for Night Fighter operations with pilots flying Wellington Bombers, Hawker Hurricanes and Spitfires above the resort. The Spitfire Visitor Centre brings this time alive, with Hanger 42 now a replica of its former self, housing a number of incredible aircraft used in the war. Visitors can experience the sights and sounds of an operational WW2 RAF Squadron Fighter, view the UK’s only bf109e Luftwaffe fighter, and even explore the insides of a Spitfire! The Hanger was also the base for aviation pioneer and ATA pilot Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia. Johnson tragically lost her life during a WW2 delivery mission from Blackpool to Kidlington in 1941, crashing into the Thames during bad weather. Learn all about Amy and her fascinating history at the Centre.
