Lancaster Castle
Get locked in a witch’s cell A beacon for justice, Lancaster Castle was a working prison until 2011 and now provides a valuable insight into the justice system with its fascinating tours. Learn all about the crimes and punishments of the people, its role in the persecution of witches in 1612 and spend time in the eerie cells that hold history within their walls. Lancaster Castle stands proudly overlooking the Lune valley below, and from the castle walls you can see far out across Morecambe Bay, the perfect spot on which to build a protective stronghold, like the Roman fort that stood there before. Following its use for defence, it became a place of justice and remained so for centuries. The only castle in the north owned by King Charles III, it is well worth a visit to discover more about the city’s past. Visitors can enjoy a bite to eat in the Atkinsons Cafe in the castle courtyard and step back in time at the nearby Atkinsons Coffee shop, where coffee has been roasted since 1845! Don’t miss the Police Museum at the Castle and enhance your visit by combining it with the Judges Lodgings just down the road to learn more about the people who served out justice at the Castle.
