The Whitewell Stepping Stones

Enjoy an exciting walk through the Forest of Bowland starting in the historic village of Whitewell. In addition to The Tolkien Trail (page 43), the Ribble valley has a number of fabulous walks, including the opportunity to cross the River Hodder over the ancient Whitewell Stepping Stones! Only to be attempted when the river is low, the Burhome Bridge and Stepping stones 3 mile circular is a great option for those looking for an adventurous river crossing. Starting at the village church, cross over via the stones, before going north through beautiful countryside to Burholme Bridge, where you cross back over the River Hodder and return to Whitewell. Alternatively, a longer 8.7 mile route takes you south to a second set of stepping stones near Doeford Bridge before returning to Whitewell,
