Boozy Bees

Morning The Bee Centre, Lancashire - Combine a stay at the Shepherd’s Hut Hamlet, Samlesbury Hall with a Honeybee Experience at the Bee Centre, located within the Hall’s ground. Lasting around 90 minutes, you will learn about the honeybee and beekeeping techniques from an experienced beekeeper before stepping into a beekeeping suit to get up close and personal with the bees as the hive is opened. See the bees bringing nectar and pollen back to the hive, making honey, building honeycomb and doing their ‘waggle dance’.

Afternoon Brindle Distillery, Lancashire - Head to nearby Brindle Distillery where local honey from the Bee Centre is used to produce some of the award-winning Cuckoo Gin and join a 3-4 hour experience for the keenest of gin fans. This workshop combines an informal talk about the founding of the distillery and gin with a tour and the chance to create your own blend of botanicals in a mini pot still, resulting in your own recipe 70cl full size bottle of gin. Your recipe will be signed off by the Master Distiller and kept on record for future reordering.

The Birds and the Bees

Morning Chester Cathedral Falconry – Visit the beautiful cathedral gardens, book onto one of the bird experiences and you will receive a hands-on introduction to the spectacular birds of prey who live there. Includes handling a golden eagle, flying a hawk and meeting the owls, right up close. From daily flying displays to children’s nature trails and a look at the other wildlife in the centre, there is plenty to keep all of the family entertained. - OR - Cheshire Falconry, Blakemere Craft Centre – Prepare to be amazed as you put on the gauntlet and get hands on with magnificent birds of prey in a range of truly incredible flying experiences led by an expert falconry team. Afternoon Martin Mere, Lancashire – Visit an internationally important wetland nature reserve. Rare and endangered water-birds can be hand-fed at the centre which is a magnet for thousands of wild ducks, geese and swans in the winter. Day 2 Robinson’s Brewery, Manchester - A proud family of independent brewers, Robinsons is one of the most advanced and sophisticated breweries in the UK, with a worldwide reputation for real ale. Join their tour guides as they educate and entertain you on your journey whilst revealing the secrets behind their award-winning brewing process.

Art in Nature

Day 1 Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, Manchester – Take part in a sketching workshop set within the beautifully-restored former home of renown Victorian writer, Elizabeth Gaskell. The house provides the inspirational surroundings for you to learn ways of recording your memories of a visit using your own sketches and illustrations.

Day 2 Cheshire School of Photography – Bring your art skills into the 21st Century and discover everything you need to know about taking great photographs. One to one tuition in Chester will show you how to maximise the use of your digital camera to capture an array of scenarios and locations.

From Farm to Fork Day 1 Courtyard Dairy, Yorkshire Dales – Learn how to make cheese with the cheesemonger of the year. You’ll be guided through the background science and technical theory of how to make cheeses, and then experience hands-on cheese-making of two distinctly different cheeses. And you’ll get to take home the cheese you made.

Harthill Cookery School

Nestled alongside Peckforton hills in the Cheshire countryside just an hour’s drive from Liverpool and Manchester, the Harthill Cookery School is set in a restored Victorian village school providing a unique and tranquil place to try out a range of indoor and outdoor cookery experiences.

There are over 40 different courses to choose from, bake off, barbecue, wood fired or fire pit cooking sessions. The Bee Centre

Based in the grounds of Samlesbury Hall, the Bee Centre creates a buzz about bees, providing a free and unusual opportunity for the public to learn about the importance of bees (and other pollinators) and to find ways of helping to support them and our environment. The uniquely designed observation hive enables visitors to watch bee demonstrations throughout the year. Between April through to October visitors can take part in the centre’s ‘Honeybee Experiences’. These events last for approximately 90 minutes although are weather dependent. Small groups of visitors (usually 6-8) are taken into the bespoke, on-site, training apiary (suitably kitted up in beekeeping suits and gloves), enabling them to get up-close- Opening Times: Wednesdays and Sundays 11.00am - 4.00pm. Combined with an informal talk about the creation of the distillery and their award winning Cuckoo Gins, a full tour of the distillery is provided with up to 4 Gin Cocktails and some nibbles to soak up the booze! The main event sees you pick your own botanicals and create a gin recipe to distill in your very own mini pot still. After distillation, you package your Brindle Distillery

before for extra instruction). The day starts on flattish ground doing figures of 8 so the instructor can assess rider ability. This also allows the rider time to get used to the bike and get their body position in the correct position before progressing onto the sections. The instructor will flag out various sections throughout the day with each one becoming a little more challenging as the rider begins to progress. Northcote Cookery School

The Northcote Cookery School is one of the UK’s top culinary schools offering inspirational cookery courses from the heart of Northcote’s Michelin star kitchen. A variety of culinary courses are offered, from skills & techniques; entertaining; themed classes; and premium master culinary classes, with a choice of half days and full days. Courses are delivered by Head Tutor Bruno Birkbeck and Junior Tutor Emma Lawson, with master classes available on selected dates from Executive Chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen and visiting guest chefs. The Cookery School features four stations which can accommodate up to a maximum of eight students. This really is a unique and intimate experience learning new culinary skills and dishes by professional chefs with the opportunity to watch through the glass front all the theatre of a Michelin star kitchen. Martin Mere

An internationally important wetland nature reserve, ranked by Birdwatching Magazine in the Top Ten sites to birdwatch in the UK. A year round attraction, home to a wetland animal collection (mainly water birds) canoe safari and adventure playground. Average visits last for around 4 hours – there is a full programme of guided walks and talks throughout the year. Rare and endangered water-birds can be hand-fed at the centre which is a magnet for thousands of wild ducks, geese and swans in the winter. Between March – October visitors can board a canoe and take a 30 minute expert guided tour of the wetlands. Samlesbury Hall is one of the stunning stately homes of Lancashire, a haven for history lovers, where the past meets the present - a fantastic family day out. Tour guides are always in costume and often happy to talk on a one-to-one basis either before or after their tours. Themed our guides include the hall’s resident witch, Tom – the wandering minstrel, the Lady of the House and Henry VIII who will enthral you with tales of the many lives and families that Samlesbury Hall has seen come and go over the centuries. From be-headings to bewitchings, their fascinating and often gruesome tales come to life in front of your very eyes. Group Tours – available upon request by prior arrangement. Diamond Awl Workshops present practical leather courses where you can learn all you need to know about making leather goods, from wallets to tote bags. One and two day courses are available including the chance to stitch your own sneakers in a day.

Elizabeth Gaskell’s House

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-65) was one of the most important and best loved Victorian writers. Her novels and letters reveal a warm-hearted woman who was a shrewd judge of character, inquisitive, witty and profoundly concerned with social justice. Besides telling a good story her novels often reflect the social and political tensions of the day. She lived at 84 Plymouth Grove in Manchester with her husband William and their daughters from 1850 until her death in 1865. Her beautifully-restored house provides the inspirational surroundings for a number of creative experiences, boasting spectacular period rooms, villa garden, tea room and a much loved book shop selling a range of new and second hand books. The Courtyard Dairy is a unique, specialist cheese- shop and cheese-maturer, owned and operated by Andy and Kathy Swinscoe. In 2017, the shop expanded into new premises with a visitor centre telling the history and story of farmhouse cheese, a café serving cheese-based dishes (and, of course, coffee!), and a cheese production room, alongside plenty of free on-site parking. The shop itself has become a renowned destination shop, where regulars and visitors alike enjoy the opportunity to sample and purchase some of the finest cheese to be found in Europe, whilst benefiting from Andy and Kathy’s comprehensive and entertaining cheese knowledge. Andy and Kathy now invite visitors to learn how to make cheese in this purpose-built cheese dairy. You’ll be guided through the background science and technical theory of how to make cheeses, and then experience hands-on cheese-making of two distinctly different cheeses. And you’ll get to take home the cheese you made. The cheese-making course runs from 9.30am - 3pm and includes lunch. Each course is for up to eight participants, with each participant using separate cheese vats and moulding equipment to ensure everyone gets a full experience.
