LANCASHIRE IN FILM
A FOWL STATUE This year saw a brand- new statue unveiled at the Animate Entertainment Centre in Preston. Feathers McGraw now stands proudly near the 2021 statue of Wallace and Gromit, with Wallace in the “Wrong Trousers” it looks like the villain of the movie is operating them to make two fabulous art works come together. The statue was unveiled by Preston born creator of the series Nick Park in February and follows the latest instalment in the Wallace and Gromit series; Vengeance Most Fowl which was aired on Christmas Day 2024. With a long history of writing connections to Lancashire and his home town into the movies and series’ Nick Park has never forgotten his roots. The latest movie looks to have taken inspiration from some of the local landmarks in Lancashire and beyond with a museum which looks like The Harris, and a canal boat called the Accrington Queen appearing on screen.

Carnforth Railway Station
GREATEST DAYS IN THE RIBBLE VALLEY In 2023 Clitheroe made the headlines as the setting for the Take That inspired Greatest Days Musical. The film tells the story of five fans as they grew up and enjoyed a boy band reunion later in life. Clitheroe’s cobbled streets and community feel are easily recognised and help bring the story to life. There is a trail to follow through the town which highlights some of the prominent filming spots.
Pendle Hill and the moors can be seen in shots as the gang make their way round the countryside getting up to their amusing antics. Blackpool on Screen Recent Disney+ addition The Stolen Girl features shots captured at Blackpool Airport where a luxury private jet was grounded for two days. The resort is no stranger to film crews having hosted Samuel L Jackson and Helena Bonam Carter in 2016 for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, James Nesbit in Netflix’s Stay Close and so many other films and TV shows over the years. Of course, each year the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom features on Strictly Come Dancing and the Winter Gardens Blackpool on the auditions of Britain’s Got Talent too.
A LONG HISTORY OF FILM This is just the latest in a long line up of on- screen appearances that Lancashire has had going back a whopping 80 years! This summer is the 80th anniversary of what has been dubbed the “most romantic film of all time” Brief Encounter. This war time classic was filmed almost in its entirety at Carnforth Railway Station and its surrounding areas. The station now proudly boasts movie prop selfie areas, and the Bistro is a replica of what is seen in the movie. The Carnforth Station Heritage Centre is a must visit for any fans too.

FILM LOCATIONS YOU CAN VISIT In addition to the Carnforth Heritage Centre and Bistro, there are several places that have appeared on screen which you can visit in real life. Hoghton Tower has appeared on screen many times over the years with some of its most noticeable appearances being in Russell T Davies’ Cassanova featuring David Tennant, Life on Mars and Peaky Blinders. You can visit Hoghton Tower and drive up its famous driveway before enjoying a tour of the building or afternoon tea. Another famous on-screen building from Lancashire is the Ashton Memorial, again having been spotted in an episode of Peaky Blinders. During the final series which aired in 2022, eagle eyed fans can spot the interior of the stunning monument as it stands in for the Gray’s Mansion. Visitors can look inside the building, and you can even book this impressive space for weddings. Again, in Lancaster, Dalton Square and the Town Hall were used during scenes in Sky’s 2024 series Robin and the Hood, and, of course, nearby Morecambe has been used as the main setting for the ITV drama The Bay for the last six years. There is a Bay Trail map available which outlines some key spots to visit throughout the seaside resort. Other places to visit include Queen Street Mill where Colin Firth appeared in The Kings Speech, Cleveleys beachfront for Andor with Diego Luna, and East Lancashire Railway where a little famous bear called Paddington enjoyed a ride in Paddington 2.

TOWNELEY HALL REOPENING
A jewel in Lancashire’s culture crown, Towneley Hall, has been closed for the last two years for repair and restoration work. The work on the magnificent Grade I listed building which dates back to the 1400s was required to future proof the space for future generations. Returning visitors will see the stark difference in the building, with repairs and conservation carried out on the plasterwork and paint throughout the building to put the décor more in line with what it originally would have been. There have also been repair works to the roof, stonework and windows. The reopening will see the exhibitions within the museum return and the treasure trove of objects which have been in storage since 2023 will be viewable once again, in addition to a variety of great events. Don’t miss Bill’s Teddy Bear’s Picnic in July!
