Visit Lancashire this Christmas

SHIP at Half Moon Bay

THE WYRE WAY For more serious walkers, the time between Christmas and New Year might be the perfect opportunity to set yourself a new challenge. The Wyre Way Walk is a 45 mile route that takes you from the mouth of the River Wyre to Abbeystead Reservoir, taking in all the beautiful sights and sounds of the local wildlife on the way. The area is rich in marshland making it the perfect hibernation spot for wildlife, and winter birds will be in abundance. The walk is split into three sections and is designed for seasoned walkers and may be gruelling in certain weather conditions, so be aware of flooding or bogs that could mean a detour is required. The Fleetwood Peninsula Loop, usually section 1 of the walk requires a ferry crossing, so you may have to adjust accordingly depending on the timetable. You don’t have to complete the walk in consecutive days either, so maybe section 3 could be your boxing day walk, and you can take on sections 1 and 2 as a new year’s resolution?

HALF MOON BAY LOOP

A coastal route with cliffs, chapel ruins, sculptures and a beach to run wild and free on. Half Moon Bay is a popular choice for walkers no matter the weather. Start your route in the middle of Heysham village, before making your way to the St Patrick’s Chappel ruins and the stone graves famously used on the Black Sabbath Greatest Hits album cover, before meandering over the cliffs and dropping down to the beach near the port in low tide. During high tide you can stick to the path which takes you by the beautiful SHIP sculpture before joining the road to walk back into the centre of the village. There you can find a play area for the kids to enjoy, if they aren’t too tired of course!
